The sandwiches are made with fresh sliced meats and fresh baked bread. Submarina offers a variety of subs, including the Cali, with turkey breast, bacon and sliced avocado; a cheese sub; the Albacore Tuna; the "Triple Play," with ham, turkey and roast beef; the Vegi; the Arb, with avocado and roast beef; an Italian sub; the East Coast sub, with prosciutto, capocolla, ham and salami; and sub melts.
Fans say your taste buds will do somersaults in your mouth when you try the Monterey chicken sub, but the classic hot pastrami sandwich is just as great. The restaurant also offers a variety of salads and sub sides like their signature macaroni salad, chips, green salad or seasonal soup.
"We have over 30 specialty items made just for us. The roast beef is made strictly for our recipe, and so is the pastrami," Gehring said.
"We wanted quality and freshness. That's what we do here," he said. "Once you try us, you won't want to go back to the other guy."
Describe your business and its products or services: Submarina is a fast casual sandwich shop, offering a unique sandwich experience. We offer a large comfortable dining area away from the serving line. We hand-slice all of our premium sandwich meats to order, right in front of the customer. Our French and wheat sandwich rolls are baked fresh by a commercial bakery and delivered to our store first thing in the morning, along with three different kinds of freshly baked loaf of bread. Our produce and condiments are prepped fresh each day. Our customers can order a sandwich just the way they like it. Nothing is prepackaged. We have 16 different kinds of meat, including jalapeño bacon. Any of our sandwiches can be ordered as a wrap or salad.
Why did you start this business?
My wife and I were looking for a sandwich shop franchise where a customer could order a fresh sandwich on different kinds of loaf breads as well as the traditional rolls. We wanted a sandwich shop that stressed freshness and quality and then delivered it. Submarina-California Subs provided all of that and more.Where did you get the idea?
We did extensive research on the Internet and attended several franchise expos. We reviewed many franchise offering circulars and visited many different stores in different locations. Submarina seemed to have everything we were looking for.How long and what did it take to open?
From making the initial decision to proceed, scouting sites, signing the lease, waiting for construction, obtaining city permits, constructing the interior and training staff, it took just a little over a year to open the first store.What were the start-up costs and how did you finance them?
The start-up costs included deposits, permits, construction, equipment, signs and inventory. The funding came from savings and a Small Business Administration loan.From whom did you get advice?
We received advice from other fast-food franchise owners, friends and Internet research.What problems developed that you hadn't considered?
Construction delays from the building contractor and permit delays with the city due to different interpretations of the building code. Once the building was completed and the permits were issued everything went smoothly and as planned.What are your goals for your business?
We plan to open our second store in Lancaster within three to four months. We want to provide the best sandwiches in the Antelope Valley in a friendly family atmosphere.
